The Unexpected Rewards of Menopause

Laugh, cry, and revolt against misogyny with our new What’s Underneath muse, performance artist Kembra Pfahler. Though raised by a surfer family in Malibu, she was anything but a Malibu Barbie. A renegade spirit from the get-go, Kembra was running topless on the beach as a tomboy kid and sporting suits and shaving her head all through high school. Today, we love how she embraces her menopausal body and how it has impelled her to “not give a fuck more than ever.” Her art movement, Future Feminism, includes CocoRosie and Antony of Antony and the Johnsons, and they'll tolerate no half-measures when it comes to confronting the rampant devaluation of women in our culture. Kembra herself believes that every woman, no matter their size, should be addressed as if they were president: “I had to take a big chalkboard eraser and erase all the creepy subliminal messages that were thrown on me as a woman. In the 60s, women sacrificed everything for freedom. We have go as hard right now.”
