In our newest Dispelling Beauty Myths series with Allure, we’re challenging our culture’s mainstream beauty norms and how they leave out the 20% of our population with disabilities.
Our second video features badass style blogger Mama Cax, who was 15 when an aggressive form of cancer claimed her right leg from the hip down. While she uses forearm crutches to help her walk, at first, she did her best to conceal her prosthetic leg with long dresses and skirts. But since the day she posted a photo on Instagram with her leg uncovered, she was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, and realized that her physical differences gave her the gift of standing out. As she explains in the video, “This label of a person with a disability, or ‘an amputee’... There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s the same label as being a woman or being a black person; it’s just a label.” Today, Mama Cax’s courage to be unique has made her an icon of empowered personal style.
