We asked musician and performer Jo Equality Lampert to be a part of the What's Underneath Project because she redefines what it is to be the pretty girl with her screaming-out-loud, stunning androgyny. As-label defying as her style — we’re talking camouflage jacket paired with acid-trip tights, a gigantically oversized tee, aviator glasses without the glass, and a sideways cap — Jo unveiled to us her struggles with often being mistaken for a “sir,” as well as her confusion, at a young age, with her sexuality and intimacy. In a photo that Humans of New York took, the caption read, “A Girl Named Jo,” and, for us, that “girl” is a bastion for the kind of fuck-your-boxes-my-body-is-mine moxie that WU is all about.
