“The people I find most interesting are usually the ones that were outcasts. It’s usually the quiet ones that express themselves the loudest,” says Ashley. In fact, she is so otherworldly-looking that Ashley could pass for a life-size doll. Like a ghost from the past, as she refers to herself, her fair skin and “dark creepy eye,” looking “like she hasn’t slept,” are spooky and beautiful at the same time. Ultra feminine, she is always in velvet and lace and even her socks have to be frilly. Ashley wears her ’60s flower child meets 1800s Victorian aesthetic on her sleeve with loads of Lennon sunglasses, fringe, corsets, lace chokers and granny boots. She is so deep into her fairytale world that friends make fun of her because she looks like she woke up singing with birds flocking to her window – picture a witchy Snow White.

Darian Darling

Some dream of having the life of the most glamorous, stylish blondes throughout history – Darian has chosen to live it. For her, being a redhead and brunette was “fun” for a stint, but paled in comparison to the hyper-seductive fantasy of classic Barbie, Marilyn Monroe and Madonna. Admittedly not effortless in her style, everything for Darian has a reference and a scenario, including her surname, which is an homage to the blond transsexual superstar Candy Darling, of Andy Warhol fame.

I have faint memories of Archie comics and can still remember practically drooling over the bubbly perfection of Betty and Veronica, while Darian’s fascination with the glitzy rock and roll of Jem and the Holograms lives on. Her flannel shirt, worn as a dress with fishnets, pays homage to Courtney Love, but is made uber feminine with studded peep toe Louboutins and no Doc Martens in sight. Debbie Harry gets a couple of nods with Darian’s circa 1979 black disco dress and her blondie with a chocolate cookie bottom recipe. The original platinum bombshell is paid respect with Darian’s Swarovski crystal pumps and a cupcake that has sugar diamonds on top. In red lips, nails and patent leather shoes with a Material Girl ’80s oversized blazer, silk teddy and layers of spiked bracelets, Darian has left her inner junior high geek behind. I mean, who paints their room mauve so that it casts the perfect tone onto nude skin other than Darian, our very own blonde-centric Wonder Woman?

Eden, named after Steinbeck’s masterpiece novel, loves the idea of making oneself a piece of art. In SLU interviews, I usually ask how far back they can remember being so passionate about their self-expression. Eden was in diapers when she discovered makeup on her own during her dad’s naps. Today, she favors extreme eyebrows and bright lipstick and is on her way to having her own makeup line. She says that makeup isn’t fake: “Even if you have clown makeup on, I still think it’s some part of yourself that you can exude.” Face paint is of so much importance to her that if the world came to an end, she says she’d use strawberries for her lips and find a way to create eyeliner.

There are many overriding threads among SLU’s so-called black sheep, one of which is getting kicked out of class for not conforming to dress code during their formative years. Though she was voted homecoming queen, Eden was sent beyond the principal to the doctor’s office for deconstructing her Catholic school uniform and wearing “crazy” hairstyles, fishnets, 5-inch maryjanes, and cut-off sleeves. I wish I could have seen Eden in full teenage affect, although her inner creator is still very much in full swing. With wedges and hose that would stop traffic, Eden’s heros, Dita Von Teese, Betty Page, and Madonna, better move over.

I was completely amazed by the overwhelming abundance of color and texture that Shine has created in her home. Her affinity for indigenous cultures radiates through her style, from the decor in her house to the tribal marks that she paints on her face as makeup. She is the ultimate free-spirited single mom, musician and makeup artist (Shine’s Myspace). She draws her inspiration from astrology and the illumination of the moon and stars. Everything about Shine glitters.

Shine’s favorite stores are Buffalo Exchange, Jet Rag in Los Angeles, and Wasteland. Her favorite makeup company is Mac.
