Michela is too humble to believe that she is an arbitor of taste, but in my opinion she is. When I first met her at New York Fashion week in February 2010, I was arrested by her presence. Michela stood out like like a glamorous Pocahontas in a tribal knit cap, red boyish cardigan, khaki military pant, the prototypical Rolling Stones tee, tan suede bucks and a fur jacket that I can imagine Daniel Boone would have worn. It is hard for me to understand, but Michela says that she is sometimes referred to as a “fashionista,” but insists that she is not. It was beyond obvious to me that she was as individual as it comes when I first spotted her in her unique, earthy and eclectic layering of the classics among a sea of black platform ankle boots. Michela’s arsenal of crisply pressed white button down shirts, that serve as the basis for her wardrobe, belies anything close to trendy. In fact, it seems as though she has an obsession with the fundamentals and her cabinets are filled to the brim with them. Some examples of what she feels you can’t have enough of: all things military, including camouflage and khaki, leather and suede pants, and indigo and white jeans (which she so accurately claims are good for winter too). However, for me, Michela’s long pin straight hair to her waste and absence of any makeup, a la Georgia O’Keefe, puts her in the category of iconic. Though she would not accept this title, take a look at her aura while sitting Indian style, barefoot, on her Zebra carpet in her indigenous, floral pants.

Dutch-born Sonny Groo has perfected the art of assimilating the latest in fashion and making it his own. Never too trendy and always cultured, his style is so refined that you could throw everything up in the air that he owns and however it lands, the combination would work. He is extremely thoughtful and intelligent in his approach to making the changing tides of fashion work for him, without being a slave to the industry’s mecurial and possibly bankrupting temperament. For starters, everything is uncomplicated in black and white. There are the prototypal handmade black boots with the small heel that he wears with almost everything, whose shape is a subtle perfection of classic and cool and that he buys every year. He is a master of recreating the of-the-moment drapey pant for close to pennies, by wrapping obese-sized thrift shop trousers across his body and pinning others to create a sense of cascading folded couture artistry. Sonny is so sensitized to maintaining elegance (always at a small cost), that when he goes for something potentially gender-bending, he keeps it 007 polished, by choosing a black leather skirt, layered over pants, under the quintessential aristocratic trench and accented with shiny driving gloves. Sonny’s signature Lanvin glasses, that are both forward and timeless in their oversized appearance, are probably what tell the most about him, as he always wears them and they always work.

If you like Ashley Wick, her mom is her biggest influence. Black leggings, white shirts, cashmere sweaters, bold jewelry, all topped off with the classic of classics Marni trench…..how much more Audrey Hepburn-esque could you get? Sharon’s pics in the Vogue days are mesmerizing and wreaking of inspiration, and she is just as memorable now. And how about the legs? She can ABSOLUTELY still wear shorts and she totally rocks a pair of black leggings, Danskin not American Apparel. There is a total air of old Hollywood about this entire family.
