Kristine Barilli

occupation: DJ, student, and musician

I am obsessed with anything from London in the late ’70s, Seditionaries, Anton LaVey, black metal, Clockwork Orange, anything black, anything dead, the New Atlantis by Francis Bacon, Bas Jan Ader, anyone crazed and creative.” Kristine Barilli

I always leave a SLU shoot inspired by a tip or idea. In Kristine’s case, it was many things, but the one I followed through on was the Rick Owens onesie (birthday present to myself). She fully convinced me of its worthiness for every day and every occasion (you could sleep in it or wear it for black tie), which is pretty much how Kristine always dresses. She despises Halloween, because for her, every day is an organic expression of “dressing up” as she feels. It’s all about her uniform of all black (never jeans) and an architectureal silhouette. You might see Kristine walking to the corner bodega in her only vintage piece, an ostrich feathered bolero, inspired by her ultimate style hero Brian Eno, or in one of her cutting-edge pair of boots to the gym. She actually works out in her favorite band T shirt that she wears all the time, Suicidal Tendencies, and reluctantly caved into purchasing sneakers, but the closest ones to her armory of wedges. Admittedly hardcore about her passion for music (she is habitually either djing or home researching bands and songs), she is equally driven to perfection with her impeccable futuristic goth wardrobe.

Marcelo Burlon

occupation: Editor-in-Chief of Rodeo Magazine, Stylist, DJ, and Party Organizer

Fashion makes me feel free and young. Marcelo Burlon

Marcelo is the second of four people that Jeffrey Williams found for us in Milan. We now have Angela Grossi, who lives in Milan, as a permanent ambassador for us there, so there will be many more from Italy to come. Marcelo was born in Patagonia, Argentina and at the age of 8, remembers putting on fashion shows in his backyard. Presently, the “character” that makes-up Marcelo is someone with the passion and energy to launch and edit a magazine, organize PR events for companies like Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Jil Sander, Prada, and Maison Martin Margiela, style, and dj. Considering how productive Marcelo is, it is not surprising that he is inspired by someone as prolific as Alejandro Jodorowsky, who was an iconic actor, poet, filmmaker, and playwrite (famous for the Mexican Western “El Topo”). As much as Marcelo loves clothes, he sees the potential superficialty that his business can bring, and most endearing is that he can laugh at his own infatuation with it. However, it takes an intellect to express with such ease the depth of vision of a suit in bold primary colors.

Nikole Ramirez

occupation: student, dj and entrepreneur

“I am not one to talk very much. I am the person that walks into the bar and goes straight to the corner to watch everyone else.” Nikole Ramirez

Nikole has a picture of her “Nana” in her closet in honor of what a big influence she was on her style – she was very glamorous (I remember a big head of coiffed hair) and she never left the house without makeup. It’s hard not to notice the correlation between the strong and well-dressed women in her family (her mother too) to Nikole’s fascination with the performance artist Leigh Bowery, guys in drag, and club kids, whom she is so inspired by because of their freedom to express themselves in the most extreme ways. She loves watching their confidence to appear in public looking “completely ridiculous, with glitter all over their faces and in get-ups that resemble condoms.” Nikole interprets the street into her own – often but not always less glitzy, with a myriad of mixes of denim and black leather (not surprisingly, considering her obsession with punk and rock). She is proudly from a few generations of entrepreneurs, who over time transformed a hot dog stand into beautiful restaurants. Nikole’s big black eyes reflect the deep roots of her heritage and has given her an understanding of the beauty of all parts of a culture, from the homeless in with their “dirty” and “torn” clothes to her prized Givenchy peep toe boots.

occcupation: shoe designer and DJ
Upper Echelon Shoes (UES)

Style is not necessarily a costume or “show,” and can have as much, if not more, impact when it is subtle. When I first met Nick, I was intrigued right from the get-go when I saw his Stubbs and Wooten slippers with the red devil emblems mixed with his understated jeans and t-shirt, and even more so when he mentioned that he wears this outfit basically every day. He makes the Ksubi’s new with the timelessness of the velvet loafer. It wasn’t hard to uncover more of Nick’s uniquely good taste and rock star-esque charm as he pulled out everything from the Abe Lincoln stovepipe hat to the monkish Rick Owens hoodie. In addition, he gets into the mood of each quintessential piece, tipping his head or telling a joke, with his dry sense of humor, much in the same way that he does with his music as a successful DJ. It takes a lot of self-possession and insight to keep it simple, light-hearted, and maintain an edge.

Tiziano Mazzilli

occupation: renaissance man….he’s done and is doing it all

Tiziano has an endless fascination with discovering what’s underneath everything in culture, from fashion to music to literature to art. He is, he claims, not of a country, but of the world, and his interests and accomplishments resonate with his all-encompassing passion for life everywhere. As a result, when one is trying to capture him visually and literally, as I am trying to do on this site, it is impossible to fully accomplish, because he is immeasurable. Tiziano is inspired by everything and it reflects in everything that he does from his oversized “diamond” ring bracelet, an engagement gift to himself, to the Native American inspired Hermes scarves that he made into a shirt. It made sense to me that only he could be behind the world famous, each one of a kind, line of clothes from London called Voyage. Veteran Fashion Designer, DJ and Artist, it impossible to label or confine him, he is living art. When I first met him in his home, I was immediately swept in by his huge heart and wildly eclectic tastes. You cannot help but want to be enveloped.
