This story is modeled after some of Patti Smith’s most iconic style images with her lifelong friend and sometime lover, Robert Mapplethorpe. As we know, this duo eventually became legends in their own rights, but during the late sixties and early seventies they were “Just Kids” and kindred spirits, vagabonds searching for their artistic Valhalla.
With effortless style, Patti and Robert brought androgyny and gender roles to the surface of art and fashion – Smith, with her Keith Richards-inspired haircut and Mapplethorpe, with his sexually provocative photography. Fashion was such a pure extension of themselves, as was everything in their lives, and it remains timeless, free from fads, trends, seasons or eras. Casting SLU muse DJ Louie XIV as Patti echoes her as a frontierswoman, not only in dress and music, but in the questioning of our prescribed identities.
