Dorky is the new sexy when it comes to Max Vernon. If being talented, committed, deep-thinking, hard-working, silly, and handsome is nerdy, then who would ever want to be “cool” again? At the ripe old age of twenty-one, Max is an accomplished pianist and musician – he records, arranges, mixes, and co-produces his own music, all of which is accompanied by outrageously crafted drawings that in and of themselves would be enough of a feather under one’s cap. Best for me, however, is how he fully comprehends the importance of connectivity when it comes to the journey of being an artist, and as a musician, treating style as an equally important method of communicating one’s message to an audience (“I do think that fashion effects the kind of music you make in ways that you can not expect. Have you ever seen a person dress in all black clothing with gothic eyeliner tell you that his favorite music is reggae?”). When it comes to style, Max has lots of it, but what I love is how he doesn’t take any of it too seriously. One of his favorite subjects (and his major) at NYU is gender theory (which he does take seriously), and on that note, there aren’t many men who can make all hearts pound in a “reject” iceskater’s outfit, a lady’s church ensemble (with a large woman’s necklace and Margiela-esque fur sleeves that he added), or a tuxedo with children’s googly eyes glued all over it. Despite how self-deprecating Max is about his wardrobe, the way he wears a plus-size women’s beaded blouse tucked into high-waisted pleated trousers, to me, is brilliant. So I’ll have to forgive him if he really did “kill” Prince for his purple blazer with studded lapel.
You can find Max’s music on YouTube, Facebook, or MySpace. If you like Max, you might also enjoy Rachel Lena Esterline and Wilson Standish.
Pretty much loved everything about this.
He couldn’t be furthur from the truth! ” have you ever seen a person who dresses in goth, all black who’s favorite music is reggae”. Well, i dress in all black mostly, have long hair, white boy with eyeliner and all and yes, my favorite music is hip hop and reggae. I dont get my fashion since from rock and roll music i just love fashion and i know what looks good on me. Maybe he shouldn’t be so stereotypical. It sounds foolish!
Travis you’re a completely daft, right? So you dress like a goth but you’re really an reggae loving gangster… kill me. Why in bloody hell would you want to represent something that isn’t you? That sounds shallow and pretty god awful honestly.
I loved this interview, Max is really a brilliant person inside and out.
I didnt say he wasn’t brilliant. i dont know him he seems like a cool guy. are you narrow minded as well! i grew up in the south where all i listened to was hip hop reggae and r&b. In high school i only wore baggy clothes and people called me a wigger. when i moved to nyc 10 years ago my style changed. i finally got into designers and fashion. i never said i dress goth. i said i wear black a lot! I grew to like country music. I like all kinds of music. What i choose to wear has nothing to do with what kind of music i like! Some of my fav designers are damir doma, julius, margiela, pugh, and r. owens. He just needs to be more openminded when it comes to others. Just b/c you wear black and eyeliner doesnt mean you only get your style from punk or rock and roll music. i have a collective group of friends and they like me for me, i’m real.
this kid stole my heart. his art looks amazing and so do his close but i really just love how he seems so down to earth and silly. oh yeah, and GOOGLY eyes!!?? wtf?!
Brilliant! The fact he wears google eyes on his clothes is amazing enough and the Prince quote is so true.
and his voice, goodness i’m in luuuuuuuuuuuuuuv.
Travis, lighten up he wasn’t being that serious, he was just trying to show the connection between fashion and music, and making a joke out of it.
didn’t take it serious just giving my point of view. have a look @ andrew mukamal video. he’s so on point when it comes to what i’m trying to say. people look @ him wearing dark clothes with long hair and assume he’s into this particular kind of music and he said, they couldn’t be further from the truth. i understand the connection with music and fashion but my aesthetic is much broader than that.
I think that max is just trying to say that the type of music that he makes influences his style, and that his style influences and inspires his music. I think Max is a very interesting person, and I love his aesthetic… i especially love the googly eye suit..brilliant!
oh, and also, the drawings in the video are BRILLIANT! he is an incredible artist and musician…just listened to his music on myspace and am impressed.
Love him! Love it! such an inspiration
Wow, pretty much everything Max said really hit home for me… the whole people seeing him as aloof and cold, be he actually thinks he’s dorky and silly… i feel completely the same way
. It is both refereshing and comforting to watch the videos on this website and connect with people halfway around the globe to me (I’m in Australia), thankyou you stylelikeu
Impressed. I love men who take style risks!
all around greatness x loved the sketches !
I love this guy! Hilarious, and excellent taste.
At first I didn’t realize his suit has googly eyes until he said so. I really have to give him credit that it is particularly well done and hilarious at the same time. Googly eyes will always remind of Christopher Walken, which is not a bad thing.
holy shit… I went to middle school with this kid…
hi i was wondering if anyone knew where i could get a pair of his silver shoes ….i saw them on asos a while back and i fell in love with them……but have been unable to kind a pair that was priced around the same price the asos pair ($125)
GREAT GUY
Black church lady outfit! Hmmmmmmm.

I love when Max says, “in terms of of fashion, you can’t worry about what other people are going to think about you, you just have to make yourself happy and become the image that you see in your head.” those are wise words that I think can reach even farther than just personal style, but personal philosophy.
