Barbara Flood

"Nothing is in, and nothing is out. It’s about what really looks good on you and how you feel in it." Barbara Flood

Collecting started at ten years old when Barbara’s mom bought her all new dresses each time they went on a holiday. Since then it’s been all form over function for her. It would be unlikely to see Barbara, even walking in a snow storm, without a plumed top hat (of some variation) and a one-of-a-kind and the “bigger the better” estate or costume ring, bracelet, pin, and earring, and some kind of collectors handbag. She is possessed by art, both to wear and decorate with. A standout for me is the Eisenberg 1940′s oversized broach, it is masterful in its timeless coolness. I could see it worn in so many ways, including on ripped-up jeans, even though Barbara wouldn’t be caught dead in them. She admits to only one weekend a year at the beach (what would she take off?) and packing almost her entire wardrobe for any trip. She loves new designers and scours the world looking for them (this is evident in her chock-full-of every culture and time period Manhattan apartment). Barbara’s decor and style includes emerging artists like Katie Daniels and David Mandel, whom she prides herself on supporting. As a muse and model for the iconic Rudi Gernreich, alongside other legendary beauties such as Peggy Moffitt and Leon Bing, Barbara’s spirit for the extraordinary in life resounds.

If you like Barbara, you might also enjoy Patricia Fox or Felicia Rosshandler.

She is so fabulous!!! I love how she does the piles and piles of jewelry. It is really something that I think a woman earns with age. It looks completely natural on her, like Iris Apfel for example. I am absolutely crazy for her long tuxedo coat and how she wears it with the massive brooch!!! Absolutely fabulous!

The video leaves me breathless….I’m so honored to work with Barbara. I agree with Stanley that this should be expanded into a great television special!

Recently met Barbara in New York and one of my staff amd close friend went to see Barbara”s collection. I was not able to as I had to return to Canada. I would appreciate making contact with her via e-mail. Would you please give her my e-mail address and name.

It isn’t every day you meet someone so intriquing and with such an incredible sense of style and life.

Hello, My name is Susan Freedman Londoner. I am a former dancer with New York City Ballet, and a photographer now living and working in Los Angeles. As a former dancer and stylist I have collected vintage clothing since I was a young woman, and have recently opened a shop in my home in Los Angeles. I wanted to thank you for posting this video on Barbara Flood. I had the great fortune of meeting Barbara for the first time yesterday at the Vintage Textile and Clothing Show at Pickwick Gardens, here in LA. As it was my first time as a seller at this event, I didn’t know Barbara, but was immediately bowled over by the beauty and style of this fabulous woman. Now I am even more thrilled to have had the opportunity to not only meet Barbara, but to know that she Barbara purchased an item of clothing ( A vintage Aztec Blazer) from my shop VINTAZIA that appealed to her. I was so intrigued by this chance meeting, that I had to search Barbara out, and the first thing I found was your blog. Barbara is beyond fabulous. She was wearing the most spectacular outfit and of course her jewelry was incredibly bold and beautiful. Everything about Barbara speaks of her amazing style, beauty and character. I wish I had, had more time to speak with Barbara, and hope to visit her shop in her home the next time I am in NY. What an inspiration! Thanks for shopping with me Barbara, but most of all thanks for introducing me to the woman that is you!
