In quintessential StyleLikeU fashion, when arriving to Myf’s apartment, she had to throw her keys out of her window in order for us to get in the front door, before we climbed up the inevitable six floor walkup, leading to the gem of her apartment in the least likely of places. But even more quintessential was the fact that Myf opened the door in a leather hat splattered with paint, a beaten up white leather jacket with a Southwestern motiff and her American themed DIY shoes, against a back drop of walls filled with colorful portraits of all of her friends and tye dye sheets hanging from the ceilings. I knew we were in for an inspiring ride through Myf’s world.

Myf explained that her parents didn’t let her have toys that were based off of pop culture, in order for her to develop her own imagination. Thus, when she spontaneously runs out to grab coffee in the creative combination of an Ohne Titel multi colored knit cardigan and a patchwork sheepskin coat tied around her waist, with only her tye dyed boys underwear underneath, it looks so good that she ends up staying in the ensemble for the rest of the day and night, while doing her usual meandering around the city. I love how she wears her roommate’s button down shirts as skirts as well and how everything gets her signature written all over it, like her tie-dyed Ksubi jeans.

Interesting conversation is what Myf most admires in another person and it is almost as if she is seamlessly conversing her expression with the world through everything she touches. This can be seen in her artwork, which mostly depicts her friends who she paints because she loves them “to death,” or the morphing of an outfit form one day to the next, deriving from things that her peers have left at her place or traded with her. Buying clothes for Myf is rare, except for the occasional Indian dress from a store where the owner, who has a crush on her, gives her a discount.

Myf gets her independent spirit from her mom who presently lives in Tazmania (Myf is from Australia), in the middle of the forest in a house that is entirely self sufficient, equipped with solar panels, water tanks, dams, a vegetable garden and fruit trees. In the tapestry of a Phillip Lim floral cowboy shirt with fringe, royal blue shorts from Where Romance Was Born, cuffs and a scarf from India and a linen duster, Myf says of her mom, “She does pretty much whatever she wants to… and I am much the same as she, just 30 years later.”

We don’t need corporations to tell us what is “in,” when inspiring and independent minded people like Tamu are so in touch with making clothing and trends their own. I take notice of her innovative white shirt buttoned to the collar with a floral, slit pencil skirt, yellow socks and her favorite kitten heel, pointy sling backs, as much as the fact that she has a law and business degree, a son, a successful street style blog (one of my absolute favorites), and has also moved to Italy, learned the language, and is now the Editor in Chief job at Grazia in Milan. Let’s just say, while Tamu has a crush on the styles of her unique street subjects, I have a crush on hers– it’s a win win for the new, fluid and creative way fashion is being consumed.

I don’t know whether I want to paint her portrait or run to the vintage store to find something similar to her flea market sequin red and black floral dress (that someone said looks like her mother’s curtain), because the romantic way she wears sequins makes me think I could wear them too.

I was an art history major in college and began my career at museums before working at Conde Nast Publications in the late 80′s. Looking back, my obsession with art was largely fashion based– I could stare at the clothes and jewelry in an Ingres portrait for hours. And by the same token, fashion those days was more about art, as people were not paid to wear clothes. Sofia, in her Art Nouveau romantic dresses and layers of textures and patterns, sends my visual senses into a happy orbit, similar to that of my art history and early fashion days. I don’t know whether I want to paint her portrait or run to the vintage store to find something similar to her flea market sequin red and black floral dress (that someone said looks like her mother’s curtain), because the romantic way she wears sequins makes me think I could wear them too. Looking at the confident way Sofia composes everything that she wears, balancing her long dresses with piles of Indian wooden bangles, scarves wrapped over her head and some kind of exotic shoe like her chinese wooden wedges, it’s not a surprise that she has a masters degree in Fashion History. In fact, Sofia has found a way to have a career that combines her love for the academic side of art and culture with the practical world, as an exhibition designer and fashion curator. She recently archived the monumental Alexander McQueen show for The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Sofia sees dressing and fashion as a part of art and I love how she inspires others in the way that she wants to be inspired herself. Like her own mix of vintage, indigenous and inherited clothes, she is drawn to things when they tell a story about the past and help her to understand something she didn’t understand before. Or in her words, how closely connected material objects are to what a culture or people are saying on a deeper level. As an example, her desire to never wear jeans and to always wear her mother’s decorative medallion stone necklaces, can be as illuminating as how the Swedish avant-garde was created as a reaction to its heavily folkloric traditions (which was the subject of one of Sofia’s exhibitions). Martin Margiela is another great inspiration to her for the spider web of thoughts in his collections, Sofia states. It took her two weeks to understand what he stands for when Sofia was working on a retrospective on him at The Mode Museum in Antwerp.

In order to be a good curator of how a culture adorns itself, Sofia travels to and studies many different countries– it’s like social anthropology, she says. She is possessed by how, through her exhibits, she can highlight the juxtapositions in society and understand the collective thinking and soul of a society. What Sofia loves about fashion is the way in which someone can visually awaken her by dressing the body in an experimental way, or how one can create surprising themes, shapes, crafts, patterns, cuts, colours or techniques that help her to understand something that she didn’t understand before. In her antique Chinese silk pastel robe over a floral pastel dress, with a leopard shawl from Africa, artistry and vision is what Sofia brings to the all to homogeneity of today’s fashion world.

It was a seminal moment to walk into Kenny Scharf’s Brooklyn loft, walls filled with his fantasical and iconic paintings that I had seen many times hanging “up town.” The museums do a good job of making you feel as though the artists that inhabit their sacred spaces are from a world far from you and me. However, Kenny is not only as unpretentious a famous guy as I have ever met, but anyone that takes themselves too seriously he says, makes him run the other way. Laid back in his 70′s striped bells (that he proudly claims he brought back in the 80′s) and silk-screen DIY tees, Kenny is an open book about the pros and cons of being reared in the tinselly world of Beverly Hills High School. The west coaster in him loves nature to this day, but he realized at an early age that it’s no good to become out of touch with the world because of fame. In fact, making art for everyone has been Kenny’s life passion (he is legend in the world of graffitti art) Malia, Kenny’s daughter, is so inspired by how true to himself her dad has always been, that she is making what will be the first documentary on him, while she is studying to be an actor.

Extraordinarily real and low key like her dad, Malia is makeup free and unfussy in Rosebowl vintage finds. Her earthiness (and some of her clothes, like her amber necklace and orange bustier Alaia dress,) also comes from her mom who she describes as a Brazilian “Amazonian goddess.” Having grown up on the beaches of South America and with a dad who painted everything from the washer & dryer to his cadillac in which he picked her up from school, her parents built a world around her that is dedicated to elevating the mundane and infusing the magical. Fruit loop boxes hang on Kenny’s walls (better than cluttering the counters with junk), he swings from a trapeze and covets his 70′s new wave sharkskin suits that came out of garbage cans (like all good things did in those days, he states.) The artist whose art was initially inspired by MC Escher and the psychedelic posters of head shops in the 70′s, is interested in everyone’s story and feels everyone deserves respect, whether it be a janitor or the president. And Malia, who seems refreshingly unaffected by trends in her favorite Lucien Pellat Finet comic-inspired sweater and Moschino tiger knit leggings, feels that the open mindedness of her family has created her to be very accepting and fearless when it comes to people’s differences.

One of Kenny’s first memorable experiences with Keith Haring was when the latter artist painted himself into the corner of a room to the beat of the Devo song he was listening to. Keith, Kenny said, “was one of the most important people in my life.” We ended our shoot in Kenny’s other worldy-hyper trippy, colorful basement of a 3D art explosion with father and daughter dancing in day glo, Kenny in a full on neon painted suit and Malia in a Keith Haring tee shirt that he had given her. Malia knows little else but a world of beautiful things with every surface covered by her dad’s hand as a result of his obsession with the idea, why should any experience be mindless?

If you love Kenny and Malia, you may also like Andrew Logan, Mia Christiana and Glenn O’Brien.

What I love about Theophilus is that you can’t put him, his style or his music in a box. He wants to be able to connect to people everywhere because of how eclectic, passionate and thirsty he is for knowledge, “like a sponge.” The outfit for the cover of his first album, “Timez are Weird These Days,” is inspired by Leon Ware, “a black jazzy dude who wrote Marvin Gaye’s ‘I Want You’ record,” Theophilus explains. And despite the skeptics, who wondered why he wanted to look like an old man in a black suit and a hat with gold chains, he followed his gut and resisted being told to wear what would appeal to kids in Supreme. He attributes his chutzpah to his Auntie Cleo who dressed him in a pink tuxedo for church, where he had to stand in the front pew. I wonder how Auntie Cleo would feel about the aesthete in Theophilus, who knows just how to pull off a Rick Owens pant/skirt combo with a wide brimmed, rabbit leather Rochembeau hat (that he himself inspired the designers to make).

Unique is what you have to be to break in the music business today, as “it is no longer this kid is good and get him dressed by a stylist… You have to wake up in the morning and have your own agenda,” Theophilus says. He stops at nothing when it comes to sartorial details– he is a designer as much as a musical artist and alters everything to his exact fit and refined liking, even admitting that as a kid, he would take his pair of Jordan’s over a million dollars. An example of his keen eye for detail can be seen in Theophilus’ custom navy blazer that has gold buttons going up the sleeve, green felt under the collar and touches of royal patches from English flea markets on the pocket. He complements the jacket with DIY Ksubi’s, that have crocodile on the back pocket and monogrammed velvet slipper that he designed.

On the shoot, we got a hint of Theophilus’ taste for the finer things in life, like one of his latest songs that includes a sample from the seminal “Dance Hall Days,” as well as his Prada suede argyle jacket that he wears with handmade camo leather pants. However, despite his success, Theophilus clearly remembers his days of couch surfing and making his first record on 12 dollars a day eating wings and fries. I am inspired to pray for money to fall from the sky like Theophilus does, but his overriding desire to make music that will stick with his generation is his true source of wealth, studded Louboutins and all.

Tarajia was scouted by DJ Louie XIV and then intern Matt Jacobs at a Charlotte Ronson event, way back in our first year. Unfortunately for Tarajia, one look at how chic she makes a breton and cut off jeans and I was determined to do this feature on her, despite her shyness. I discovered that Tarajia’s mother is her biggest role model for how effortless she is, “even when she is coming in from the garden with dirt on her knees she looks elegant,” Tarajia states. Walking into Tarajia’s world has that same type of polished, without trying, feel. Her home in Brooklyn looks like it is the chicest of barns in upstate New York (where she spent a lot of her childhood) and her dog sleeps on a fisherman knit cardigan. Tarajia’s black metallic cut off Geoffrey Beene 60′s dress, made out of something akin to astroturf, on her looks dignified with the help of some patent Louboutin pumps.

Transporting herself through the romance of tradition is what captivates Tarajia. She gets dressed up at her vanity to go out at night (even if just a date with her boyfriend) and warms plates in the oven for a dinner party, like her mother did. You can see the thread of classicism in everything Tarajia wears and does, from the quintessential Chanel blazer that she wears with the perfect vintage YSL satin shoes with bows, to her obsession with cooking, turbans, old china, fish from the fish market (not the grocery store) and her layers of heirloom rings. She doesn’t get rid of anything, because everything old becomes new again, she feels, so Tarajia remains relevant in a Giorgio di Sant’Angelo knit dress from the 70′s worn with Margiela boots. Like food, Tarajia believes that clothes are emotional and the common denominator between everyone.

We have DJ LouieXIV to thank for spotting the formidable Trae Harris at The New School, as she introduced us to the highly conscious and creatively gifted, identical twins, Dynasty and Soul. The two live up to their names, in that they approach everything, from their indigenous burlap hats to their twinhood, as an exercise in better understanding their identities, which is not an easy task growing up gay. But adversity, combined with the solid parenting of their dad who is from Nigeria and mom who is from the West Indies, nurtured Dynasty and Soul into their power. The tattoos that cover their bodies, with symbols of genies, chakras, Egyptian mythology and the Brooklyn subway system, are a testament to their strong sense of heritage (including a love for the richly diverse Flatbush) and refusal to buy into the homogenous conventions of the larger culture that surrounds them.

They are not only each other’s muses in their dedication to escaping sexual stereotypes, but as inspiration for their respective business’. Dynasty, with her finesse at mixing an animal print head wrap with a camouflage jacket and yellow printed hoodie, is a clothing designer, who designs with her sister’s more graceful, rich and effortless layering in mind. Her modern take on a unisex cargo pant is just the right combo of slim and baggy and is filled with concealed details, as exemplified by the multiple pockets in all the right places. Soul, with her classic button up to the neck, vintage vest with a Victorian watch fob, bloomers, luxe tassel belts and floral tights, is a metal smith who explores the significance of ancient geometry in her jewelry with her sister’s attraction to the oneness between masculine and feminine in mind. I love Soul’s square and triangular bangles and the strong, simple, gender-neutral feel of her rings.

Dynasty & Soul’s mom, Josephine, taught them to dress, and thus live, with a sense of freedom and individuality. As a result, they are handsome as they are beautiful and “not the book that you would assume to know about when you pick it up to read it,” as Dynasty says.

And despite that she is the youngest of many strong people in her life, she is clearly her own person, which is obvious in everything from the finesse with which she throws a cozy sweater over a sheer slip to the honesty with which she feels she won’t cave to being insecure just to fit in. Ecstatic about her ’70′s knee high Frye boots, John Lennon shades, mini vintage velvet dress and writing poetry, Tallulah says that her dad always told her, “do what ever you want to do and we will love and support it,” and it shows.

One is Paisley Dalton, whose long silver tribal earring created that kind of high I get when I just “have to have” something.

I first spotted Sara on First avenue in a handmade ivory knit poncho, her signature “wicked” 70′s bell bottom jeans that she alters and patches, and her spectacular silver bangles that she wears up to her elbows and never takes off. I walked by her initially and did the usual double take for a split second until I realized that destiny had called. It turned out that fate would have it that she was the esteemed jewelry designer who made many of the adornment on her arms and that I had come to learn about from two other of our Closet muses. One is Paisley Dalton, whose long silver tribal earring created that kind of high I get when I just “have to have” something. The other is Jimmy Webb, who is iconic for his layers of mind boggling punk-meets-Christian silver jewels. He has amassed a collection of Sarah’s pieces that I sadly could only dream of attaining.

When I came to shoot this feature on Sara, I knew that I would be overwhelmed (in the best way) by her passion for dressing, but I didn’t expect there to be as much as I found. Sara’s affection for all things Native American goes way beyond her seminal squash blossom necklace that she paid for on lay away in 8th grade. A white leather coyote bag with feathers that she made hangs in her closet, while white fringe Isabel Marant boots are on her “must get” list. In fact, boots play a close second to jewels for Sara in order of obsession. Haider Ackermann over-the-knee ones are drop dead sexy with a floral dress and Gaultier ankle booties, that she cleverly wears with American Apparel athletic socks, giving a tough feel to a Vivienne Westwood halter dress and bloomers. While rock and roll lives on in a big way with Sarah in her American flag leather pants and a Rick Owens fitted jean jacket that makes all others pale in comparison.

But the utimate inspiration for me about Sara is her “I don’t give an fuck” attitude in general that reflects not only in her style, but in her willingness to be out of the box in her self-expression, even if it means flying under the radar when she is more talented than most. Nothing can get in the way of her attention to detail, for her, art means more to her than commercial success. Sara will alter something until it’s right or she will make something if she can’t find anything as great, like her Victorian silk bloomers. I envy both her blunt honesty when she says, “I just like to make shit” and her unsual humility when she pulls out this spectacular, embroidered coat that she made while on vacation. Creative purists like Sara fascinate me, I am attracted to them like a magnet because of the part of me that isn’t one.

If you love Sara, you may also like Jimmy Webb, Kay Kasparhauser Goldberg and Sarah Temple Raston.

One of the most exciting aspects of the StyleLikeU journey is discovering and celebrating the commonalties between those who seem very different from one another. In the case of William, we are practically twins, and this goes way beyond the similarities between his traditional cossack regalia and my Rick Owens look-a-like coat with its monastic feel. For William, priesthood is not something that he uses to be on a pedestal, but is an artistic journey that enables him to connect more fully to people. What defines an artist, he feels, is “the way that you look at the world… having moments when your vision extends beyond yourself and you engage more deeply with someone around you.” Like a rock star, he is true to himself and unexpected at a party in rich tweeds, ascots and purple socks with a navy suit. Or at his work in prisons where even in the celebrity status that his collar instantly offers him, he has learned to hold a mirror to himself, no matter how uncomfortable. “Prisoners,” William has come to learn, are no different than you or me, aside from their life’s circumstances. They are rich, poor, educated, uneducated, artists and musicians. There is a very fine line, I think, between being on this side of the wall and that side [prison].” At the core of all of us, William explains, is a desire to know who we are. He helps to bring identities, including his own, into the light, by walking down the street in his robes that render him “classless,” attracting both the hisses of construction workers or the blind adoration of a child. For William, both responses beg the question as to why? The stories in the scriptures inspire him to uncover prejudices and presumptions and I seek to do the same with this site by giving a platform to the creative process and stories of people like William, whose life mission is to be an individual, no matter the difficulties.

In fact, William is effusively at ease not living up to the expectations that popular culture puts on him and his profession. This can be seen in everything from his warmth and refeshing honesty about how his prayers are getting less wordy, the joy he expresses in shopping on Portobello road, how a marigold sock looks with a trucker boot, and the disappointment with every outfit since the perfection of his cinnamon colored knickerbockers, yellow stockings and cable knit jumper of middle school. What really matters is what William feels Jesus Christ was really about, he points out. “He was a disruptive trouble maker with a dry wit who questioned authority and came to show that those who are poor and dispossessed are precious in God’s eyes and they should be precious in our eyes as well… And not to walk past them,” no matter their dress or circumstance.

With his flaming curly red hair, cut in his own version of a faux hawk, attraction to Victorian vintage and colors that don’t necessarily go together, it is not a surprise that William is a square peg in a round hole in terms of fitting into the holy bubble of the church and organized religion. As a result, he has chosen to spread his faith by being in the real world and not confined to a building. “You have faith, but how can these awful things happen all the time, isn’t that the ultimate conflict of it all?,” Williams seeks to address. Presently he is the Chaplain of The University of the Arts, where people have challenged the notion that artists would need assistance with their spiritual lives. To the contrary, William is passionate about artists as the world’s healers.”The creative process,” he states, “involves an element of deep exploration and a little suffering and pain along the way, like giving birth, bringing life and creativity into the world.” His hope is to show the students, that through their power of creation they can change the world, and mine is to give a voice to those as inspiring as William, for their ability to stand as alone in their garb as they do in their daily lives.
