Brought to you by Stylelikeu and SLU resident DJ (and all around fashionable dude) Louie XIV.
OK, so SLU’s Fashion Week coverage was dedicated to what fashion feigns to be about, but in reality is not, an openness to creativity and new ideas. When she said this, I thought this was a novel concept when one thinks about what New York Fashion Week has become, a select group of industry insiders and fashion hanger-ons, who do not reflect the much larger talent group outside of the “old guard”. So reflecting on the passing of yet another Fashion Week cycle, and in celebration of Elisa and the relaunch and redesign of StyleLikeU, I put together some songs that have been on my mind. I felt compelled to create a playlist that celebrates individuality and represents ideas that I observed in and around fashion week. And of course, inspiration for and by the people.
- “Fight the Power” – Public Enemy – An anthem about getting together to rally against the establishment. Very appropriate.
- “Fashion” – David Bowie – A nice little diddy about…Fashion! (Also, it was in Clueless, so you know this was getting on here.)
- “Creator” – Santogold – Definitely one of SLU’s theme songs…A song about owning your own creativity, and the thrill and power that comes from that. Very inspiring. Also, used in the SLU trailer!
- “All The Critics Love U In New York” – Prince – One of my faves on 1999. The critics don’t always love “u” in New York, but fuck critics anyway.
- “Fancy Footwork” – Chromeo – I was at a show yesterday and some of the shoes those models had on!..holy shit…THAT’S fancy footwork.
- “Brianstorm” – Arctic Monkeys – A song about POSERS…just saying…
- “Workin’ Day and Night” – Michael Jackson – A frenetic Off the Wall ditty about working your ass off for something you love.
- “Love Today” – Mika – A real runway stomper of the highest order… A song that demands universal love. Also, an honest song about how badly people really just want attention…
- “The Way I Am” – Eminem – A song about the battle to of staying true to yourself at all costs. This song got me at age 14 and it still resonates as my favorite moment in Slim’s career.
- “So Happy I Could Die” – Lady Gaga- One of the saddest mainstream pop songs I’ve heard in a while, really captures how empty modern life can feel and how disconnected we really are from one another (although it’s fun as shit, Twitter can’t fix this.)
- “New York I Love You, But Your Bringing Me Down” – LCD Soundsytem – Felt this a lot this week….
- “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” – Nina Simone – Can we all relate, SLUniverse? I think so.
Check back next week for a new playlist, and come check me out, every Tuesday at CV Lounge in The Hotel On Rivington. This Tuesday, we will be hosting the SLU Fashion Week After-Party. See invite to follow shortly!!!
